Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana)

The leaves and stems are “said” to be edible but only when boiled “three times in water”. Otherwise, this plant is said to be entirely poisonous.

In other sources, it is said that only the new shoots, about 6″ tall, can be substituted for asparagus or spinach but that after this length, the plant becomes poisonous.

Travelers have eaten these berries, which has induced vomiting after a certain number. and some people will use the berry as body paint.
